The first summit.
Renamed Imja Tse but known everywhere as Island Peak — a name given in 1953 for its appearance as an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. It is Nepal's most-climbed training peak, the first summit for thousands of climbers.
The route is short but real: crampons from high camp, a rock gully and the final headwall on a fixed line. From the top, the whole south side of Lhotse fills the sky.
