The Matterhorn of the Himalaya.
Ama Dablam — 'mother's necklace' — is the mountain every trekker in Khumbu knows by heart: long ridges on each side like a mother's arms, and the hanging glacier at her breast completing the image.
It is climbed almost exclusively by its south-west ridge: three rock towers, the grey mushroom ridge and a final traverse beneath the glacier. Technical, sustained, and superbly exposed.
