The first eight-thousander ever climbed.
Annapurna I was the first 8,000 m peak ever climbed — a feat achieved in 1950 by a French team before Everest. Its name derives from a Sanskrit term for 'goddess of the harvests'.
The massif encircles the Kali Gandaki river valley, the deepest gorge on Earth, and its climbing record carries a heavy statistical weight: the mountain has the highest fatality-to-summit ratio of all the eight-thousanders.
