The white mountain.
Dhaulagiri — 'dazzling, white, beautiful mountain' in Sanskrit — was considered the highest mountain in the world from 1809 until 1838. It rises with astonishing directness above the Kali Gandaki gorge, which it shares with Annapurna on the opposite wall.
Its north-east ridge is the standard line; the Dhaulagiri Circuit, which approaches beneath the mountain's glaciers, is among Nepal's most serious treks.
