The sacred fishtail — never climbed.
Machhapuchhre — the 'fishtail' — dominates the Pokhara skyline and the Annapurna Sanctuary. Its double summit has never been stood upon: a 1957 British team turned back just short of the top, honouring a request from the then King, and the mountain has been closed to climbing ever since.
The mountain's image defines Nepal's adventure capital; its finest viewpoint is the Mardi Himal ridge immediately east.
