The five treasures of the high snows.
Kanchenjunga is the easternmost eight-thousander, sitting on the border with Sikkim (India). Until 1852 it was believed to be the highest mountain in the world. Its name — 'the five treasures of the high snows' — refers to its five summits.
It remains a mountain of expeditions rather than traffic: approaches are long, infrastructure minimal, and its first ascensionists famously stopped short of the very top in deference to a promise made to the local people.
